"Stories of Migration" Book Design

The brief for this project was rather straightforward. The goal was the creation of a work celebrating the topic of migration through typography, while the actual term “migration” was left open to the interpretation of an individual. The brief was issued by ISTD as a part of their annual student awards programme.

In its basic definition, migration is movement from one part of something to another. Keeping that in mind, everything can migrate, from an individual taking a trip from their bed to their kitchen, to the linear passage of time, starting before anything we know yet existed and leading us to the point where we might find ourselves now.

I decided to present migration as something rather natural. I conducted interviews with 5 people coming from the countries of Ex-Yugoslavia, who now live outside their birthplace. I turned those interviews into stories and created a book that illustrates each journey through typography.

"Stories of Migration"

Multiple layouts from the book, all designed using InDesign and Illustrator.

All stories rely on specific circumstances of each individual featured. For example, Andrea from "Andrea's Journey" wears glasses, hence the blurring of some letters. Ana from "Ana's Journey" used to travel by train, hence the typography being turned into train tracks, etc.

Typography

For this book, I created a transitional typeface based on the 3 scripts used throughout history in the area of ex-Yugoslavia. Glagolitic (the historical script) gradually evolves into Cyrillic, then into Latin script. This gives another layer to the story of migration/transition.
